Back to School
When I was a little kid, we always used to approach the new school year with a certain ambivalence. On the one hand, it was exciting to be going back — a new year, a new grade, the chance to see your friends every day. On the other hand, it was back to the tiresome drudgery of schoolwork, new responsibilities, and the chance to see your enemies every day. Either way, however, it was an interesting time.
For some reason I don’t fully understand yet, I’m feeling that way about the forthcoming term. Part of it is certainly the fact that I’m looking forward to being one of the teaching assistants for Computer Science 18, but I think also there’s something about the autumn air, a certain woodsmoke sort of feeling that brings back the warm memory of days gone by.
This is almost certainly reinforced by the fact that I spent this past weekend camping and hiking along the Franconia Ridge Trail with a good friend. Getting away from the deep roots of civilization always brings me more into balance with the world.
