Full of Sound and Fury
With January, winter arrived, bitterly cold, and washed away the green and warmth of the world for a few frigid months. But even now, when his icy grip has slackened, and the earth murmurs in her slumber, awaiting the waking clarion of springtime, the rumour of that bleak time remains, wrought deep into our souls as we bring fire and war upon distant Iraq. We awaken from our winter slumber only to find that the nightmare has escaped into the world of light.
But, for all that, I had a good term teaching Computer Science 4, and over the term break, I took a jaunt out to Los Angeles to visit some good friends who live out there. If you know me, that probably seems like a strange choice of vacation destinations. And, having now gone and returned, I still think LA is totally insane, but I still had a good time anyway. I’m still digesting a lot of the experience, so perhaps when I’ve written out more of my thoughts on the subject, I’ll put a few of them here.
I’m still having difficulty getting as much research accomplished as I would like. I missed a paper submission deadline in January, and although I’ve now caught up on most of the work for that, I would like to try to expand that work, and finding the time for that is still difficult while teaching. I don’t regret the choices I’ve made — but I won’t teach anything this summer, in the hopes of making some more substantial research progress.
And in the meantime, I’ll be teaching Computer Science 23, which should be a fun and exciting class!
