Today, with a great deal of help, I moved all our stuff from my old house in Lyme to our new apartment in Hanover. Before I go any further, I would like to pay a great debt of thanks to my father and my friends Tilmann, Tim, LeeAnn, Eric, and Glaiseun, as well as Glaiseun’s two children Daroc and Valkyrie. Without their able and cheerful assistance, I’d probably still be loading the truck three days from now. As it is, we accomplished the move together in about four and half hours, which is a world’s record among significant moving projects I’ve been involved with. Thanks so much to you all!
In its details, the move went as you might expect, and was surprisingly smooth and fast. I rented a fourteen-foot U-Haul truck, and brought it home. We loaded it up, drove to the new place, and unloaded it. Actually, we had to make two trips, but that wasn’t such a big deal, because I was only moving a grand total of about eight miles. In fact, the distance from my old house to the U-Haul place is greater than the distance between the old house and the new house. I could have gotten a bigger truck, but I had some concern about whether or not a larger vehicle would fit into the driveway of the new place, which turned out to be a pretty viable concern.
Anyway, the old house is now empty, and the new place is chock full of boxes. All that’s left to do is a little bit of sweeping and picking up of moving debris, and then I’m done with the old place. I even remembered to put in a forwarding order at the local post office, so that the mail will arrive where it should.
Of course, the fun really starts when Sara gets home and we have to unpack all our stuff. I said the new place is chock full of boxes—but more to the point, it’s difficult to move around in certain parts of the apartment, although I have made some progress at sorting things into useful categories. Meanwhile, I am living off of leftover sandwiches and donuts until the kitchen is sufficiently organized to be useful for food preparation again.
This post comes to you live from the couch in our new living room, and it will probably come as no surprise that I got my Internet connection going even before I plugged in any lamps or set up the bed. But at least I did set up the shower curtain and work out which plugs in the bedroom are controlled by the light-switch. Those two things, plus the couch and the network connection, go a long way toward making the new place feel like home. What can I say? I’m a geek, and I’m proud of it.
And now, I think it’s time for a shower and some sleep. Sure, it’s a bit early to go to bed, but I think I could use a little down-time. Sleep tight!
