Chapter 1: In Which Michael Introduces Himself
I am a freelance programmer currently working with the fine fellows over at Magnetk, LLC in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Until recently, I was a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Computer Science at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. From 2002 through the end of 2007, I held an appointment as a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science. For my first three years in the Ph.D. program, I studied distributed algorithms with Prasad Jayanti, and after that I worked with Sean Smith, Doug McIlroy, and Bill McKeeman on the use of formal methods to automate the debugging and verification of compilers. My dissertation was concerned with the problem of automatic end-to-end translation validation in C. More generally, I am interested in how to promote more effective communication between programmers and our machines—in short that means I study programming languages—but I am also interested in exploring new programming paradigms as well as improving current practise. Programming should not necessarily mean typing text. I believe that we can hope to improve the quality of available software by making formal tools and methods available to mainstream programmers; and it is my hope that successfully doing so might lead to an overall improvement in the quality of life for all of us who use software in our daily lives. Feel free to drop me an e-mail if you want to know more about my work. I received an A.B. in Linguistics from Dartmouth College in 1996. Prior to my graduate studies, I spent five years working as a software engineer for Thayer School of Engineering, and before that, I worked for a company called GTI/VideoGuide. Teaching usually keeps me quite busy, but when I'm not in front of a classroom, you'll often find me programming, doing research, studying, practising Aikido, kayaking, sleeping, hiking, cooking, reading, playing racquetball, sailing, ranting and raving, or being sociable. If there's anything else you want to know, feel free to send me an e-mail! I prefer encrypted mail (see above for my OpenPGP key), but I can read plain text just fine, too. |
